Dealing with negative people is always an arduous task. Being around someone who is extremely negative can be physically and emotionally draining, no matter how positive you try to be. When exhaustion sets in, it is easy to allow their pessimistic and depressing mood to take hold of you too – but there are ways to avoid falling into this trap!
Offer Love and Assurance
Negative people often feel angry, confused, frustrated or even fearful. They believe they have been let down in some way and can only see things in a bad light. Additionally, they develop low self-esteem and self-confidence, resulting in an inability to be positive about their life.
These negative traits can be nurtured by offering love, support and encouragement. By assuring them that things are never quite as bad as they seem, you can help them realise opportunities and choices are available to them. However, don’t overdo it! Adopt a gentle approach as giving them an opposing view will intensify their temper and leave them feeling more frustrated than before. Arguing with a negative person only adds fuel to the fire and the negative person will feed off any negativity that will reinforce their mood or attitude.
Give Them Time
Allow the negative person space to contemplate their thoughts. Giving too much encouraging advice or trying to make them see things from another perspective before they are ready can result in a full-blown argument. Give them time to mull over what is bothering them. This will give you the space you need to decide how to tackle the problem and identify a constructive way to improve their mood.
Don’t Let It Simmer
Although giving them time will help things settle down, too much time can create confusion and further frustration. Don’t let them wallow in self-pity for too long. Once you have given them time to think about their problems, offer them a short timeframe – maximum two minutes – to vent their issues at you. Self-preservation is a must here – if your response to these frustrations does not improve things, remove yourself completely from the situation!
Avoid the Negativity Completely
If you believe the negative people in your life are seriously encroaching on your happiness and life balance, you will need to find a way to remove yourself completely from their company. This is possible to do with friends and work colleagues. If you are utterly unhappy with a situation at work, consider a complete change for the better. With family members, such as your children, partner or husband, you cannot simply walk away. Seeking professional intervention may help to improve the situation. Creating a positive environment will protect your own well-being and happiness.
Keep Your Negative Voice in Check
Occasionally, even the most positive person tends to have negative thoughts. Keep these thoughts in check and do not allow your own insecurities get the better of you. Frequently remind yourself of your own qualities and feed positive thoughts to yourself daily. Be thankful for all that is good in your life and try to see the positive side of all situations. Identify all the great opportunities life has to offer you and work out how to achieve your life goals.
Maintaining a positive mental attitude will help you to achieve confidence, balance and joy in your life. Eventually your optimistic, happy outlook might give those negative people the incentive they need to change their life for the better!
